Honors Program

What is the TMCC honors program?

The TMCC Honors Program is for students who wish to use customized courses of study to delve deeper into academic and career courses. Students who qualify to enter the Honors Program will work one-on-one with their professors on individual projects that will enhance their understanding of course materials.

Honors students will do work on a conceptual and theoretical level that goes beyond the scope of typical courses, and will gain deeper insights into their chosen fields of study.

Who may take honors courses?

TMCC students who have been accepted in the honors program may enroll in Honors-designated courses. Program entry requirements are as follows:

  • A minimum 3.5 grade point average in college-level course work
  • A minimum 3.75 GPA for high school students and/or graduates who have not taken college-level course work
  • College and/or high school transcripts
  • One letter of recommendation from a former or current teacher

How does a student take a TMCC honors course?

After being accepted to the program, the student should fill out an Petition for Honors Credit PDF icon form. The student and the student's instructor will discuss various options for earning honors credit, sign the form, and return it to the Honors Program Coordinator for approval. This form must be returned to the Honors Program Coordinator and approved before the student begins the honors project. At the end of the semester, the coordinator will notify the director of admissions and records of the student's successful completion of the course for honors credit. At this time, the student's transcript will show the course as an honors class.

There are other ways to earn honors credit through participation in college and community service projects. Serving in student government and other college organizations is an excellent way to attain honors credit. Please contact the Honors Program Coordinator for details.

Will TMCC's honors courses transfer to university Honors Programs?

TMCC's honors program is coordinated with both the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas honors programs. Upon acceptance to the programs at UNR or UNLV, a TMCC honors student will complete the 30 credit hours requirement for an honors-designated bachelor's degree. At TMCC, an honors student may transfer no more than 12 honors credit hours to a university. Therefore, a TMCC honors student would need to complete 18 credit hours at UNR or UNLV in upper-division honors course work and honors seminars.

What are the benefits of taking honors courses at TMCC?

  • Experiencing intellectually engaging professors and course work
  • Learning in a small academic community setting with like-minded students
  • Taking honors program courses for the same tuition rate as standard TMCC courses
  • Increasing the likelihood of acceptance into university honors programs as transfer students
