Patty Avila-Porter, Program Director for Access, Outreach and Recruitment at TMCC, has been awarded the "Friends of School Counselors" award by the Nevada School Counselor Association (NvSCA).
Nevada State Senator Joyce Woodhouse was also presented with the honor.
The 2015 NvSCA Conference took place Feb. 5-6 in Reno. Awards were presented on Sunday at NvSCA’s annual breakfast, held this year at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
The “Friends of School Counselors” award was created by the NvSCA to honor professionals in our community who have consistently supported school counselors in their mission to promote student achievement, said Katie Swanson, TMCC High School Counselor and member of NvSCA's 2015 Annual Conference Committee.
“Patty goes above and beyond when working with school counselors in Nevada,” Swanson said. “She advocates for school counselors. When developing programs to remove barriers to students transitioning to TMCC, she always takes into account how these programs can help high school counselors help students.”
Senator Woodhouse has consistently supported education and especially school counselors in her work as a state senator, Swanson said.
