Just about anyone who has attended college, either to obtain a two-year degree at a community college or a four-year degree at a university, knows what an impact scholarships can have on students. Whether it’s providing funds to cover tuition, books or student fees—receiving a scholarship can sometimes mean the difference between a student being able to complete his or her degree, or not securing sufficient resources in order to do so.
At Truckee Meadows Community College, many students rely on scholarships to realize their academic and career goals. The TMCC Foundation plays an important role in ensuring there are scholarship dollars available to award each semester. By working with faculty, donors, and other community partners, the TMCC Foundation creates scholarships that benefit the diverse population of students attending classes at our Dandini Campus or one of our other four sites.
In the 2016-2017 academic year, more than $600,000 was awarded, totaling nearly 500 scholarships. This is a record for the Foundation and something for the entire TMCC community to be proud of, said Tara Hawkins, Development Officer and Scholarship Manager. The students have expressed on many occasions their gratitude to the TMCC Foundation and its donors for their support, she added.
Although the semester has already begun, there is still time for students to apply for the dozens of scholarships available. The scholarships all have varying criteria and award amounts, so students are advised to read each one carefully to find and understand the requirements.
The deadline to apply for scholarships is Wednesday, March 1. Those interested in applying can visit the Academic Works website and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the application.
