February Designated as Career and Technical Education Month
Governor Sisolak issued a proclamation naming February as Career and Technical Education Month in Nevada. This designation promotes and highlights the importance that CTE plays in preparing students to complete their programs at community colleges with in-demand skill sets, ensuring that Nevada has a highly-skilled workforce.
“This year we have seen the importance of CTE in preparing students in a COVID-19 world. The challenges in providing distance education for CTE students that respond to real-world learning experiences and hands-on activities have been met by innovative teachers and administrators. This innovation will continue to provide students with opportunities and models as they move into a changing world with new challenges and expectations,” wrote Craig Statucki, Director of the Officer of Career Readiness, Adult Learning, and Education Options that accompanied the Governor’s Proclamation.
According to 2020-1 data, Nevada has 74 active CTE programs with approximately 72,000 participants in grades 9-12, and 35,000 concentrations, and 14,400 CTE completers enrolled as of Oct. 1, 2020. In 2020, TMCC awarded 296 Skill Certificates, 53 Certificates of Achievement, 105 Associate of Applied Science and 40 Associate of Arts degrees in its Technical Sciences division. Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive, Diesel, HVAC, Machining and Welding are among hands-on CTE programs currently awarding TMCC students in certificate and degree programs.
Wizard’s Warehouse Welcomes TMCC Students Back for Spring
During the first few weeks of the Spring Semester, TMCC’s food pantry, Wizard’s Warehouse, handed out 35 free pre-packaged bags to students during the Welcome Back Week events. These packages included food and hygiene items.
Wizard’s Warehouse will continue to support those in the community in need through the Fill-A-Bag, Fill Your Heart campaign. To participate, send unused personal hygiene items to Wizard’s Warehouse. These items are especially in need because they cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits nor with food stamps. If delivering hygiene products is not possible for you, items can be purchased through the Wizards Warehouse Amazon Wish List, and will be delivered directly from Amazon to Wizard’s Warehouse.
Additionally, Wizard’s Warehouse is open to the TMCC community by appointment Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. To schedule your appointment to TMCC’s food pantry, contact the Counseling Center at 775-673-7060.
