The state of Nevada is facing a severe shortage of registered nurses, with projections indicating that this trend will continue for several years. If you’ve ever considered this career field, now is the time to commit–as there are plenty of jobs available, and many people in need of healthcare.
TMCC is expanding student enrollment in its Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Program to help meet the critical demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Nevada and beyond. Beginning with the Spring 2025 cohort, the expansion will allow more students to pursue a career in nursing, addressing the state's ongoing nursing shortage.
“Expanding our nursing program reflects both the growing demand for healthcare professionals and our commitment to serving our community,” said Jody Covert, director of the Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program. “This expansion will allow more students to pursue their dreams of becoming nurses while also addressing the urgent need for trained professionals in the state.”
By increasing enrollment, TMCC is taking action to combat the shortage and ensure that Northern Nevada’s healthcare system has the skilled professionals needed to provide high-quality patient care.
The Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program is acclaimed for producing highly skilled nurses who work in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities across the region. Known for its hands-on clinical experience, rigorous curriculum, and dedicated faculty, the program will maintain its high standards of education and support as it expands to accommodate more students.
“Our program is ready to handle additional students now,” added Covert. “We've added three new full-time faculty members this year, opened a new skills lab in Fall 2023, and increased support staff to help students navigate the program’s requirements.”
What does that mean for aspiring nursing students?
As a student in the nursing program, you’ll learn plenty of new skills and emerge with a clear path to a rewarding and in-demand career. The program is now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 semester, with a deadline of Friday, Dec. 20 at noon.
RN to BSN Program Achieves Accreditation from ACEN
In addition to the Nursing Program’s expansion, TMCC also announces that its RN to BSN Program has received initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The ACEN Board of Commissioners granted this accreditation during their September 2024 meeting, marking a significant milestone in the program’s development. This achievement reflects the program’s commitment to meeting high standards in nursing education and ensuring excellence in preparing nurses for advanced roles in healthcare.
“We are incredibly proud to have earned accreditation for the RN to BSN program,” said Covert. “It reflects our unwavering commitment to providing top-tier nursing education and preparing our students for leadership roles in the healthcare field. This achievement strengthens our mission to support the evolving needs of the nursing profession and the communities we serve.”
In addition to benefiting current and future students, this accreditation validates the experiences of past graduates who have already seen the impact of TMCC’s RN to BSN program on their careers. Jose Rivera, a 2023 graduate of the program commented, “Completing the RN to BSN program changed my practice directly from the way I manage bedside, train new nurses and students, participate actively in committees and leadership to bring about changes, and have a vision for the future. I enjoy my nursing practice so much more, and I feel I can affect change with the tools I’ve gained.”
TMCC’s RN to BSN program is an online, 12-month program designed for working registered nurses who wish to further their education and develop their leadership and management skills to advance their careers. The next student cohort starts in July 2025.
