Introduction: Encouraging New Types of Learning
The Truckee Meadows Community College 2014 Facilities Master Plan and its subsequent 2016 Addendum identified the conversion of the College’s existing library into a contemporary learning center, or Learning Commons.
This active and dynamic space will provide new types of learning experiences utilizing modern technology and interactive group spaces that encourage collaboration while preserving quiet study areas. TMCC completed Phase I of the relocation and renovation of the Tutoring and Learning Center in 2017.
Project Scope
Phase II of the renovation will convert TMCC’s traditional library space to a modern Learning Commons that consolidates services currently scattered across the campus such as tutoring, WebCollege and supplemental instruction.
Purchases will include equipment and furnishings designed for student collaborations. Primary expenses will renovate existing space, including improved access to networking and charging stations to accommodate proliferation of mobile devices, multiple study spaces for groups of varying sizes, one-stop technology support, and new finishes.
The project will be accessible to all students and will employ best practices to support student engagement and achievement.
Project Timeline
The Learning Commons project will be completed for the Fall 2018 semester.
Project Cost: $2.1 Million
TMCC is requesting to use funds from the General Improvement Fee account.
