The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program is one of eight federally funded TRIO programs and proudly joins the longstanding Veterans Upward Bound Program funded through the U.S. Department of Education. Through the Higher Education Act of 1965, Congress established a series of educational opportunity programs for students from under-resourced backgrounds. In 1968, SSS became the third program in the series, which led to the development of the term “TRIO” to describe these first three programs. The funded purpose of SSS is to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants.
