Art Exhibits on Display Sept. 6–29, 2022
Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) welcomes its annual faculty show, which will be on display from Sept. 6–29, 2022. An artist reception will be held on Sept. 7 from 5–7 p.m. in the Red Mountain Gallery, 3rd floor of the Red Mountain Building on the Dandini Campus. Refreshments will be served, and the exhibitions are free and open to the public.
TMCC Main Gallery: 51st Annual Faculty Show
The 51st Annual TMCC Art Faculty Exhibition showcases the creative research of the TMCC Art faculty. The faculty comprises individuals with backgrounds ranging from studio art and art education, to education and biology, producing an exhibition that reflects a broad range of creative expression. Artists include Mahedi Anjuman, Dean Burton, Jay Damron, Candace Garlock, Miles Hall, Weston Lee, Galina Milton, Dayan Paul, Sonny Rosenberg, Micaela Rubalcava, and Rossitza Todorova.
Red Mountain Gallery: Kites that do not fly, by EDW Martinez
The idea of Kites that do not fly began six years ago for EDW Martinez. When someone would ask him, what are you working on now? He would give a rehearsed technical reply about his artistic collage and sculptural process, to which his wife would say, why don’t you just say, ‘I am making art kites that do not fly.’ The thought of seeing his art images on a kite skin was appealing. Oh boy, another art epiphany! Why don’t I just make my own kites, embellished with my new art, using traditional kite forms and shapes, and not worry about their aerodynamics? he says. As the work developed, he became more concerned with how they would look like art on a white cube gallery wall leading him to make Kites that do not fly.
EDW Martinez has been creating two- and three-dimensional art for over six decades. He was a long-time studio art instructor, Associate Professor, and Art Department Chairman Emeritus of the University of Nevada Reno. He has participated in more than two hundred group and one-person exhibitions at the regional, national and international level, including a traveling print exhibit in all fifty US states. His art is in private, corporate, and public collections.
Erik Lauritzen Gallery: Green, Green Grass, by Ana Perez-McKay
Green, Green Grass is a series of acrylic paintings presented on oddly-sized hardboard panels, incorporating collage and needlepoint to construct lopsided windows into illustrative images that invoke cycles of growth. Ana Perez-McKay’s work is playfully colorful and intuitive, simultaneously suggesting familiarity and warmth and a cycle of stagnation in memory and ritual. Green, Green Grass incorporates ambiguous storytelling through narrative imagery to build a comfortable representation of the world through a lens of difficult emotions and personal disconnection.
Ana Perez-McKay is a multidisciplinary artist and illustrator based in Reno, Nevada. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in Spring 2022 with a BFA in Studio Arts with a Printmaking emphasis and a minor in Museum Studies. To see more of Ana Perez-McKay’s work, visit her website.
Red Mountain Student Gallery: Our Cruel Reality, by Tiana Keeler
In Our Cruel Reality, Tiana Keeler uses her paintings and photographs to offer a glimpse into what it is like to be a Woman and an AFAB (Assigned Female at Birth) in today's patriarchal society. She wants her art to make people reflect on the ongoing war against women and brings awareness to sexism, racism, and homophobia in our culture.
Tiana Keeler is a Reno-based multi-media artist. She holds an Associate of Fine Arts degree from Truckee Meadows Community College and is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Photography at the University of Nevada, Reno.
