Overview
Chemistry classes at TMCC support degree programs in the physical sciences and biology, but also in nursing, dental hygiene, radiologic technology, and those looking for careers in medicine, biotechnology, engineering, and fire sciences.
Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because it bridges the gap between physics and biology. In chemistry, we look at the world through the properties and interactions of atoms. Labs are an essential part of learning, where you will gain hands-on experience in techniques commonly used in chemistry and reinforce the concepts you study in class.
Why Choose Chemistry at TMCC?
Choosing to major in Chemistry at TMCC will provide you with many advantages, including:
- The first two years towards a bachelor's degree in Chemistry at most major universities, including transfer to the chemistry program at UNR.
- Small classes are limited to 20–28 students, with lectures and labs taught by the same instructor, so you get the support you need to succeed.
- Recently renovated labs and classrooms.
- Classes are taught by dynamic, inspirational faculty, including Olga Katkova (2016 PTK Teacher of the Year), Katie Kolbet (2016 Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award), and many others.
What Will I Study?
At TMCC students in Chemistry will study general and organic chemistry as well as the fundamental math and physics courses to help you build a good foundation for future studies. If you graduate with an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Chemistry from TMCC, you can start at junior status at UNR in the Chemistry program. You will also be prepared to transfer in as a junior at most major universities.
